Cancer has touched all of us in some way and we should all feel empowered to play in this life-changing event. We’ve outlined everything you need to know about batting, bowling, scoring and more below. If you’re new to the game of cricket, take a look at our cheat sheet before Match Day to familiarize yourself with some of the lingo you might hear.
Match Day Rules
-
Format
Each team will have 6-8 players and all teams will be divided into two divisions, Corporate and Community. Cricket to Conquer Cancer is proudly co-ed, varied rosters are encouraged but not mandatory. Each match will consist of roughly two innings, or 30 minutes of play, whichever comes first. Teams will take equal turns batting and fielding.
-
Equipment
All you need to bring is your favourite cricket bat (one per team) and your running shoes. We’ll provide the wickets and the ball.
-
The Coin Toss
In true cricket fashion, each game will begin with a coin toss to determine which team goes up to bat first!
-
Batting, Bowling & Fielding
One player from the batting team stands at one end of the pitch (the wicket) to hit while a bowler from the fielding team bowls the ball. Players will bat on rotation and each batting team will have a set number of overs or a predetermined target score to chase.
The fielding team tries to prevent the batting team from scoring by retrieving the ball and returning it to the wicketkeeper or hitting the wicket to dismiss batters. When fielding, you must avoid interfering with the batter’s shot but if you catch the ball before it bounces, the batter will be dismissed. -
Scoring
Runs are scored by simply hitting the ball and running between the wickets, additional runs (2, 3, 4 or 5) can be scored by hitting pitch boundaries and targets, but a six will lose you a point. We don’t want any balls launched into other matches.
The team with the highest score at the end of the match wins. We’ll see you out there!
